On November 4th, iFunny user Grandmas posted a version of the meme with Frank Horrigan from the Fallout series, garnering over 13,000 smiles in a year (shown below). Several similar memes featuring the G-Man were posted to Reddit boards including /r/HalfLife and /r/gmod over the following months. The meme was cropped and posted to /r/okbuddyretard on March 11th, garnering over 1,500 upvotes before being removed. On March 6th, 2021, YouTuber fresher turtle posted a video consisting of a version of the meme showing a G-Man in 7-Eleven, garnering over 1,200 views in a year (shown below). This is the first known version of the meme not using a K-pop star (shown below, right). On June 8th, 2019, a Redditor posted a Minecraft version of the meme to /r/smplive, garnering over 520 upvotes in three years. On April 14th, Instagram user sherlizamoe posted a drawing of Yukhei in prison with a similar banner, garnering over 2,900 likes in three years. On February 6th, 2019, Twitter user posted an image of rapper Yukhei's arrest with the Snapchat banner added over it (shown below, left). ![]() ![]() A collection of the memes has since been created on Pinterest by mel⁷ and □□□. It is unclear who started the trend when, but one of the earliest available memes was posted to WeHeartIt on January 9th, 2019, garnering over 1,300 hearts in four years (shown below). So what’s the deal with all of this second-hand embarrassment? And why can’t we get enough of it? Alison Herman wrote a piece for The Ringer breaking down the allure of cringe comedy, where she explains that the two involuntary responses this genre causes (laughing and wincing) create a powerful combination that we can’t resist.In early 2019, a meme spread around online K-pop communities where K-Pop members were photoshopped into various locations with a Snapchat banner reading, "Bruh look who at X," X being the location. Shows like Nathan for You, PEN15, Impractical Jokers, Fleabag, The Eric Andre Show and countless others gain massive audiences through making viewers uncomfortable. I liked the film, but I remember sharing immediately after that it was almost a little too cringey for me, as someone with similar experiences to the main character.Ĭringe, particularly cringe comedy, is incredibly popular, though. Knowing that I too had been in Kayla’s shoes was heartbreaking, embarrassing and unsettling. As a woman who was once an insecure and sad middle schooler desperate to fit in, I felt sick watching that film. I remember sitting in a movie theater in San Antonio, Texas, watching the Bo Burnham film Eighth Grade with my mother and brother and feeling intense physical pain from cringing too hard. But as long as the content is harmless and cringeworthy, members are encouraged to “get creative!” Anything from embarrassing posts on social media to screenshots of texts that should have never been sent, buckle up, because you’re in for a boatload of cringe, pandas!Īlthough r/cringepics has been around since 2012, the moderators recently posted new rules for the group, as it has just “reopened.” Nowadays, only 3 types of posts are allowed: “photos of people cringing, photos of Spez, and drawn/artistic/written words ‘Cringe’ to take Cringe pics literal.” There are a few more rules to keep the group civil, such as no content involving minors, remove all personal data and no content involving mentally ill people. With 1.5 million members, this subreddit is the perfect place to go when you want to feel a little bit better about yourself, yet simultaneously lose a bit of faith in the rest of humanity. The Cringe Pics subreddit, which has the tagline “when it hurts just to look,” has been around for over a decade now and has amassed an impressively large and loyal following. ![]() While cringe content is nothing new online, there’s still, somehow, absolutely no shortage of it. ![]()
